Plainville and Farmington neighborhoods are at risk. Join us to help protect them.
An industrial quarry is threatening our forests, water, and way of life. Tilcon wants to rezone 83+ acres for blasting near protected trails, watersheds, and neighborhoods. We have to stop it.
Blasting. Silica dust. Groundwater risk.
If approved, Tilcon’s expansion would impact both Plainville and Farmington — and could open the door to industrial development of over 100 more acres in this area.
The Issue
Tilcon has proposed a zoning change to expand industrial quarry operations into 83+ acres of forested land near Rattlesnake Mountain and the Metacomet Trail. Right next to residential neighborhoods in Plainville and Farmington.
This land, currently zoned for residential use, sits just two miles from homes in Farmington and Plainville — and directly within the Quinnipiac River headwaters. If approved, the expansion would introduce:
Blasting and noise near neighborhoods and hiking trails
Airborne silica dust, a known health hazard
Risks to groundwater and private wells
Heavy truck traffic on local roads
Degradation of scenic, protected landscapes
Tilcon also owns over 100 additional acres of land nearby. If this zone change is granted, it sets a precedent for even more expansion across the Metacomet ridge.
This isn’t just a local zoning issue — it’s a threat to one of Connecticut’s most iconic landscapes, and to the communities that surround it.
What’s at stake?
This isn’t just about one development. It’s about protecting the character, health, and future of our region.
Our Communities
Families in Farmington and Plainville live just a few miles away. This expansion would bring dust, vibration, noise, into quiet residential neighborhoods. Property values would plummet. Those with private wells could see pollution and damage to their water source.
The Trail
The Metacomet Trail is a nationally designated scenic trail used by thousands. Quarry expansion threatens access, viewsheds, and the peacefulness of this beloved ridgeline.
The Forest
The land in question includes mature woodlands and vital wildlife habitat. Blasting, dust, and runoff could cause irreversible ecological harm.
The Water
The site lies within the Quinnipiac River headwaters. Quarrying here risks contaminating aquifers, private wells, and downstream waterways.
The Precedent
Tilcon already owns 100+ more acres nearby. Approving this rezoning sets a dangerous precedent for future industrial expansion across the ridge.
